Universiti Brunei Darussalam is Brunei's oldest university. It is the largest university in the country in terms of student enrollment and curriculum offered.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam with more than 300 academic staff and 2800 students in six faculties, namely Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Economics and Policies Studies.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) was established in 1985, opening its doors to the first intake of 176 students. Since then, UBD has seen an increase in the number of graduates, the introduction of new academic programmes, the enhancement of infrastructure and the development of graduate studies.

The university moved to its current location, Tungku Link, in 1995, an environment that is conducive for learning and research. UBD is guided by its four core values; people, expertise, relevance and leadership. Today, there are eight academic faculties, nine research institutes and six academic service centres ranging from Islamic Studies, Business, Arts, Science, Health Sciences, Asian Studies, Policy Studies, Education, Biodiversity and Integrated Technologies. 

In a relatively short period of time, UBD has advanced and expanded both academically and infrastructurally, producing influential leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals. The university is always aligned to its mission of developing the individual and society as a whole through the cultivation and enrichment of the intellect, faith and culture, accomplished through the creation of an environment conducive to achieving excellence in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, public service and professional practice.

In 2009, UBD announced the introduction of the GenNEXT Programme which is an education framework designed for students to excel according to their individual learning styles. Broad-based and trans-disciplinary, it provides the flexibility and adaptability necessary to ensure that students are able to fully explore their potential in a hands-on and accountable manner, while also providing thorough and rigorous training across the disciplines. The GenNEXT degree ensures that students emerge from Universiti Brunei Darussalam with a high-quality education that is catered to for their individual needs, as well as the needs of a constantly changing world environ­ment.

In 2011, UBD introduced the Discovery Year as part of the GenNEXT Programme, in which all students are required to leave the university for one year. This is to promote real-world experiential and design-centric learning; students are given the opportunity to gain community-based or international experience outside of the UBD campus.

The success of UBD students is not confined to the academic area only. In fact, UBD seeks to produce holistic and well-rounded graduates. This is in line with its motto, “Ke Arah Kesempurnaan Insan” or “Towards Human Excellence”. UBD aims to mold all-rounded individuals who are successful spiritually, academically and athletically.

Brunei Institute of Technology/Institut Teknologi Brunei

Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), The Brunei national Engineering and Technology University.

ITB Brunei’s humble journey began in 1986 when it first opened its door to students wishing to pursue Higher National Diploma programmes in Business and Management, Computer and Information Systems, and Electrical and Communication Engineering. In 2008, ITB was upgraded to a full university status by His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien. The programmes have since expanded to include full-pledged undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. ITB is known locally for its ‘hands on’ programmes and employability of its graduates. We are proud of our core values: Professional, Innovative, Integrity, Passionate and Engaging.

ITB aspires to become a ranked engineering and technology university in the Southeast Asia by 2018. We are now starting to implement initiatives on our three Strategic Focus areas: (1) Teaching and Learning; (2) Research Excellence and (3)Community Engagement. It will be a steep learning curve and definitely a way forward for all of us at ITB. 

Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) was set up in January 1986 with the primary objective of catering for a range of interests in technical and commercial education. Its establishment was supported by Leeds Polytechnic, United Kingdom (now known as Leeds Metropolitan University) which indicates ITB’s aspiration to become a local institution that strives for international recognition.

Three Departments were first established in a shared campus with Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College: namely Business and Management (BM), Computer and Information Systems (CIS) and Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE). EEE was renamed as Electrical and Communication Engineering (ECE) when ITB moves to its permanent campus. The Phase 1 of ITB permanent campus in ‘Kampung Tungku’ was completed in 1998 with an establishment of two more departments, namely Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

Since the Phase 2 building was completed in 2001, more programmes have been offered at Higher National Diploma level and a twinning degree programme in Civil Engineering. Phase 3 buildings are now in the process of construction to cater for ITB’s fast development and would be ready by the end of 2012.

ITB was officially upgraded to a University status by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in his Decree during the Teacher’s Day Celebration on the 18th October 2008. However, ITB retains its old name. It is now one of the three fully-fledged public universities in Brunei Darussalam and is a ‘Brunei University of Engineering, Business and Computing’. More infrastructures are now being planned and more developments will be witnessed in the near future.

Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Brunei

Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (Abbreviation: UNISSA) is Brunei's second university. It was established in 2007 as an Islamic university. 

Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) is located in Gadong, Brunei and Muara, Brunei Darussalam. It is locally known as Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali.

The idea of an a second university in Brunei was suggested by the Sultan in 2004 at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam's 16th convocation and in 2005 he made clear at the 17th convocation that the new university would be an Islamic university. The overall aim of the new university is to become a centre for the spread of Islam in the region.

The University took its name from Sharif Ali who was the descendant of Prophet Muhammad and appointed as the third Sultan of Brunei. He was known as the first sultan to build a mosque in Brunei.The first intake of students joined in August 2007 when 152 students were accepted for the programmes. 125 were undergraduates, 26 Masters students and one was following a PhD. On its launch UNISSA absorbed staff and students from the Sultan Hj Omar Ali Saifuddien Islamic Education Institute (IPI SHOAS) which was until that point part of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

In February 2009 the University proposed a move to a new campus in Gadong at the former Rashidah Sa'adatul Nursing College to allow more room for academic expansion, employment of staff and better facilities.

Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal 
(Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College) or MTSSR

Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal (Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College) or MTSSR for short. The institution was established in 1985 as a result of a merger between the Sekolah Bangunan Sultan Saiful Rijal (1970) and the Pusat Latehan Teknikal Brunei (1977).

The College is directly under the Technical Education Department, Ministry of Education. The Principal reports to the Director of Technical Education Department (for detailed Department of Technical Education Organisation Chart, please refer to www.dte.edu.bn

Internally, the Principal is responsible for the College administration. The Principal is assisted by two Deputy Principals; Deputy Principal (Administration) and Deputy Principal (Education & Training), and supported by Head of Department.

The College is one of the fastest growing technical institutions in Brunei Darussalam.

Today, MTSSR is a full-fledged premier technical institution offering a wide range of courses in vocational and technical field.

Three Days in the Land of Dreams: Brunei Darussalam

Malaysian Airlines MH 730 flight destination Malaysia - Brunei Darussalam finally landed smoothly at Brunei International Airport. Afternoon trip for an hour and a half this is so fleeting. Brunei Darussalam International Airport is not so great, but think we can already feel comfortable when out of the plane. These pretty clean and service the goods so quickly. Moreover immigration also straightforward. Before I spend out of the airport for the exchange the U.S. dollar to dollar BND Brunei. 1 U.S. dollar BND 1.2 ranges or approximately Rp. 7,000.

Fandi a college friend who had not met for 12 years picked us up at the airport. Welcome to Brunei, he said. Let's go to the parking lot he said. View my eyes immediately drawn in the parking lot when he saw the luxury cars in front of me. Here luxury cars is common, says Fandi who seems to know read my mind. Society likes to large and luxury cars. Car prices here are relatively cheap for Brunei because they do not have to pay taxes. Tomorrow morning you must go to the market. They go to the luxury car market was using.

It is not surprising that a country with a population of about 400,000 people this is one of the richest countries in the world.
Once we were all ready, we finally went to the office Fandi. Fandi working in an advertising company. Do not think that in his office there are about 5 people from Indonesia. I recruit all my friends from Indonesia, said Fandi. Make no mistake that in Brunei many experts from Indonesia. Indonesian people known to be very diligent and adaptable here. Therefore, many companies prefer to hire people who Brunei Indonesia. After seeing our office finally introduced to Mr Gilani Hj Othman Hj, or used to be called Mr Hj a televison producer of Radio Brunei, who was at the event make Fandi office. Finally he who became our friend and guide during in Brunei.

Let's go to the hotel he said. The goods can be transferred to my car, a white Lexus's latest is before me. This is the first time I ride Lexus abroad. It is common here said Mr. Hj. During this time I more often use public transport or on foot during travel abroad. Here you can use public transport to go anywhere. Nevertheless it is advisable to hire a car or take a taxi because it is more practical and do not wait too long.
Roughly takes about 20 minutes by car to get to Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam. The streets are so big and very nice. Shade trees in between the road. Therefore, the summer temperatures are not so we feel as shade trees around us. Before heading to our hotel, we invite Hj to The Empire Hotel and Country Club. This place is one of the landmarks in Brunei Darussalam. Best hotel with a magnificent golf course overlooking the South China Sea. Many people who have lived here such as the late Michael Jackson and former U.S. president Bill Clinton.

Our luxurious feel is felt when entering the hotel. In front of the hotel there is a BMW showroom, in the lobby of the hotel is decorated with gold ornaments on the walls and on the roof of the hotel. Hj explain that every weekend this hotel was always full. In addition to foreign guests, many people Bunei spend time with his family here. They usually swim, eat, or play golf. Special activities like a world-class music concerts are often held here. After touring the hotel we finally had to go to Bandar Seri Begawan.

Finally we also arrive at the hotel. We stayed at the Hotel Brunei. A hotel located in the city center. Hotel Brunei is long but in the renovation back. Hotel rates in Brunei varied but usually above USD 100 per night. If you want to stay at a cheaper hotel to stay in budget with a rate of about USD 50-70. After the bath, we invite Hj for night tours in Brunei. Brunei town so quiet at night. There was no means busy port city of Bandar Seri Begawan. However, the lights that illuminate the city of gold-domed mosque in particular makes the atmosphere so different. There is a sense of peace in our hearts.

In addition, along the way there are many banners that read Daulat Kebawah Duli Tuan Patik Kekal Qarar Memerintah Negara Brunei Darussalam. Hj said that July 15 is the anniversary of the King of Brunei to 65. You should come on that date because it will be a lot of events from his kingdom. It's incredible how people respect leaders Brunei. After touring the city we finally headed restaurant in town. We chose the restaurant that sells seafood. Great lobster and tea C, such as teh tarik in Malaysia to our menu this evening. After that we also returned to the hotel.

The next day, I was up and wanted to go to the traditional market located in front of our hotel. This market is already crowded starting at 6 am. The interesting thing is the market is so clean and odorless. I spend to buy some snacks and fruit to this day. I observed a lot of people ahead of the market fell from a luxury car and was told that the people of Brunei Fandi climbed into the luxury car market.

After lunch, we drove to the park Hj ventilation Tasik Lama. The park is very well known in Brunei Darussalam. This year during a visit to Brunei President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had visited this park and plant trees as a symbol of friendship with Brunei Darussalam. This park is so beautiful with a variety of trees and waterfalls in it. Many mothers who exercise poco-poco but many parents who do Tai Chi. The same as in Indonesia that currently they are more aware of healthier living.

After that we were taken to the village water. The water village is a major tourist destination in Brunei. There are approximately 30,000 people living in this village. They are usually the ones who have been living in Brunei. Difficult for them to move to the mainland. Every day they boarded a boat to work on the mainland. Talking about water facility in the village is very good. In addition to a nice house in Kampung Air is also a school and a hospital clinic. We toured the village's water by boat. In addition to looking at life in Kampung Air we can see the king's palace and also the gold domed mosques. Incredible scenery in the distance. Once satisfied we finally get back to Bandar Seri Begawan and menghabisakan time to see souvenirs being sold around the hotel.

I spend the next day for a visit to the University of Brunei Darussalam, the largest university in Brunei. The university is very beautiful and surrounded by green leaves. I have met some many international students who are conducting a summer program here. After we finished visiting the university to take pictures at Masjid Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien. This mosque is the biggest icon of the country Brunei. Arstikek see the mosque with a very beautiful, I feel how high artistic value contained within the building.

After that, we set out to enjoy the sunset at The Empire Hotel and Country Club. Turned out to have a lot of tourists and locals who were there. Around six in the evening the place was so full of people who want to capture the sunset. It is wonderful once that afternoon, the sky begins to change color from red to dark. Slowly the sun began to set on the horizon.

Time to go back to Indonesia. After he had enjoyed the sunset we also headed to the airport. We had dinner at a time to the airport and thanked Hj and Fandi who accompanied us during the trip in Brunei. The plane was so full and airport officials gave us a bonus for class upgrade to business class. IB plane 795 Royal Brunei Airlines took us to Surabaya. Experience three days in Brunei is a very interesting experience and not forgotten in the course of my summer in several countries in Southeast Asia.

BRIEF ON R.I.P.A.S. HOSPITAL, BRUNEI DARUSSALAM The main referral hospital in the country is Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (R.I.P.A.S) Hospital, which is situated on a 42-acre site about 0.8 km from the heart of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. The hospital was officially opened on 28 August 1984 and is equipped with modern, cutting-edge medical technology. For Bruneian patients who require specialised treatment not provided in the country, they are sent abroad. In 2005, R.I.P.A.S. Hospital has:

The Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital (RIPAS) is the national hospital of Brunei. Designed by Alistair MacDonald and Partners (UK) it was officially opened on 28 August 1984.

It is located on a 42-acre (17 ha) site about 0.8 km from the heart of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.

The hospital has more than 600 beds and offers a wide range of services to the indigenous population. Healthcare in the public sector is free for Bruneians and foreign government workers.

Presently there is only one undergraduate medical school in Brunei but the government wishes to develop a formal medical training for students. The Institute of Medicine of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam was established on September 2000 and may in time grow into a full medical school. In the meantime the medical staff either have to come in from overseas, or locals have to travel abroad to receive a formal medical education.

As of 2007, the senior medical staff of RIPAS hospital are mostly trained from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

The hospital also trains medical students from the University of Queensland, Australia.

Currently the hospital is not participating in any international healthcare accreditation scheme.

• Suri Seri Begawan Hospital (SSB)

The Suri Seri Begawan Hospital is Located in Kuala Belait, 107 km from the capital. With 183 beds, it is the second largest hospital in country and serves the people of Belait District. It was established in 1972 and is currently undergoing a multi million dollar programme of phased renovation which will give it facilities comparable to the best in the region.

Phase I of the project has been completed as has seen the commissioning of a modern Operation Theatre Suite and 16 private rooms. The new Out-patient and Casualty section has facilities including minor operation theatre for managing acute trauma patients as well as other emergencies requiring immediate resuscitation.

The Hospital also provides specialist services in: Internal medicine General surgery Pediatrics Obstetrics and gynaecology Ophthalmology Oral and maxillo-facial surgery Anaesthesia Dentistry Ear, nose and throat Dermatology Psychiatry Intensive care unit Special care baby unit Physiotherapy Occupational therapy; and Other support services Renal The clinical specialties are supported by a team of well qualified pharmacists. The Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam Hospital in Bangar, Temburong District, opened in 1987. This 50-bed hospital is staffed with medical officers and dental officers who provide:

The hospital offers comprehensive outpatient care as well as extensive inpatient services, and within the organisation is an excellent heart centre, Gleneagles JPMC Cardiac Centre, run jointly with Parkway Holdings of Singapore.

In 2002, the Brunei government was looking at establishing a cardiac center in Brunei, because of the increasing numbers of patients that were sent overseas to Kuala Lumpur or to Singapore for cardiac treatment.. At the same time, Gleneagles International was also looking to expand in the region. It partnered with the Brunei government for this project. 

The CEO is the hospital is Dr. Peter Tay. Hospital employs over 120 staff, over 60 per cent of whom are Bruneians.

Currently the standards of the hospital have not been verified, as it is not participating in any international healthcare accreditation scheme.
